I’ve asked myself this question many times. I come from the tech world. I’ve built software, led digital projects, and spent years in the IT industry. So maybe I’m biased, but I also feel lucky. Because every day, I see how deeply technology shapes our work, our decisions, and our impact as leaders. And honestly? I don’t think you can lead an organization today, at least not well, without understanding technology.

Why Tech Matters in Leadership
Technology is not just about tools. It’s about how we think, plan, and grow. Whether we’re talking about internal processes, customer experience, or strategic direction, digital transformation touches everything.
I’ve seen organizations improve productivity, transparency, and innovation simply by adopting smart platforms or better use of data. I’ve also seen others struggle because leadership was disconnected from digital realities.

Tech Is No Longer OPTIONAL, It’s the CORE!
We’re far past the stage where digital tools were just for the IT department. Technology is now at the center of strategy, operations, communication, and customer experience. Whether we’re talking about AI, automation, cloud systems, or cybersecurity, these are no longer “future trends”, they’re current realities.

As a leader, I’ve seen the difference it makes when tech is part of the conversation from the start. Projects move faster, teams work smarter, and decisions are grounded in real-time data. The opposite is also true, when leadership is disconnected from tech, everything slows down or breaks down.

The New Profile of a Leader
Yes, leadership still means inspiring people, managing change, and thinking long-term. But today, it also means being able to:

  • Understand the impact of emerging technologies
  • Support digital innovation
  • Ask the right questions
  • And make sure no one is left behind in the process

Even with my IT background, I’ve had to shift from “knowing the tech” to leading through tech, connecting it to purpose, people, and performance. And I believe that’s something every leader, technical or not, can and should learn.

A Few Questions Worth Asking
If you’re leading an organization today, these are questions I regularly reflect on, and I encourage others to do the same:
• How often do I use data dashboards or analytics tools to support decision-making?
• When was the last time I led a digital transformation or supported innovation in my team?
• Do I feel comfortable discussing technologies like AI, blockchain, or cybersecurity with my team or partners?
• Am I investing in digital upskilling for my team and creating space to experiment with tech solutions?
Your answers don’t need to be perfect, but they should push you toward growth.

I’ve been in tech long enough to know that tools change fast, but mindsets take longer. That’s why leadership today isn’t just about knowing what tech does. It’s about knowing what we can do with it, and how to bring others along the journey.

The good news? With curiosity and the right support, any leader can become a digital leader.
